Kreston Academies Benchmarking Report 2019

Philip Allsop, Partner and Head of Academies at BHP, will start the conference with a review and discussion of key findings and trends in academy accounts to 31 August 2018.

Role and responsibilities of trustees in relation to trust finances and risk management

It is essential that trustees fully understand their responsibilities when it comes to the finances of the Academy Trust and are provided with appropriate timely information to enable them to challenge the Executive in an appropriate and constructive way.

In this session, Mike Jackson (Audit Partner – BHP) will explain the key new requirements of the Academies Financial Handbook in this respect and provide some practical guidance on how these can be complied with. This will include the form and content of regular financial reports including KPIs. Also, the role of the audit committee in relation to risk management and internal assurance.

Strategic HR and employment issues

Employment and HR issues are, by their very nature, both unpredictable and sensitive. They can be time critical, strategically important and, if it goes wrong, costly. So with staff being the most expensive resource for a Trust and, as part of any Academy Trust’s obligation to use its resources efficiently to maximise outcomes for pupils, it is more important than ever that the HR issue is a central part to the Trust’s strategic planning.

In this session, Jenny Arrowsmith (Employment Partner – Irwin Mitchell) will give a high-level overview of some common areas which arise for Trusts on strategic HR issues including:

  • making the most of resources and cost saving where necessary:
  •        terms and conditions
  •        restructures
  •        absence or conduct related to mental ill-health
