The South Yorkshire innovation landscape has received a significant boost following the Government’s Don Valley Corridor announcement this March. The transformative funding package and regional development plan was unveiled by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority at the Advanced Manufacturing Park. The move is designed to revitalise the industrial artery connecting Rotherham and Sheffield by growing the local economy and improving connectivity and transport.
For the advanced manufacturing and engineering businesses based at the AMP Technology Centre, this investment signals a growing confidence from regional and national funders and policy makers. The Don Valley Corridor project focuses on enhancing infrastructure, improving connectivity and growing housing and workspace stock. It fosters a ‘cluster effect’ that bridges the gap between research, development, and commercial application – it will connect Sheffield city centre and the Sheffield Innovation Spine (Sheffield’s urban innovation district), through to Rotherham Town Centre.
This news comes at a time of significant economic momentum for the region. Rotherham currently boasts one of the highest productivity rates in the country, driven largely by the high-value manufacturing sector. Simultaneously, Sheffield has been recognised as one of the fastest-growing Core Cities in the UK. Positioned at the heart of this growth, straddling the Rotherham and Sheffield boundary, sits AMP Technology Centre and the wider Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMID).
Wendy Squires, Centre Manager at AMP Technology Centre, said: “The Don Valley Corridor announcement is testament to the economic impact and growth potential of this area. For our occupiers, this means better access to talent, improved supply chain logistics, and a stronger regional identity that attracts international investment.”
The development plan is expected to unlock new land to build and provide sustainable transport links, making it easier for the skilled workforce to navigate the region. For the specialist businesses that operate out of AMP Technology Centre (ranging from green energy pioneers to aerospace innovators) the Don Valley Corridor plans reinforce South Yorkshire’s status as the UK’s manufacturing heartland.
As the Don Valley Corridor evolves, AMP Technology Centre remains committed to supporting the businesses that turn these regional investments into national breakthroughs.
