Driving Sustainable Connections at the Advanced Manufacturing Park

‘Sustainable travel’ and ‘decarbonisation’ were the focus of an event hosted by AMP Technology Centre this summer. Business leaders, developers, and regional partners gathered to explore how active travel, community engagement, and cross-sector collaboration are reshaping connectivity across the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) and the neighbouring Waverley development.

Waverley’s master developer, Harworth Group, and their Travel Plan Coordinator, Mosodi, highlighted the core mission of the site’s Active Travel Plan: reducing dependency on single-occupancy cars while preserving accessibility for the workforce.

Harworth’s Director of Sustainability, Pete Henry, alongside local council leaders, emphasised how large-scale regeneration must integrate car-free routes, green spaces, and sustainable infrastructure to support both businesses and residents.

A post-presentation tour of Waverley’s Community Garden and Olive Grove High Street demonstrated how these active travel routes can connect commercial hubs like the AMP Technology Centre with surrounding residential areas.

The event showcased powerful examples of local sustainability in practice. Co-located Manufacturer, Calibre Scientific, shared how staff-led initiatives, green energy purchasing, and corporate volunteering—such as supporting the Waverley Community Garden are embedding sustainability into daily operations.

Representatives from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and the University of Sheffield’s AMRC outlined local energy plans, low-carbon business grants, and strategic frameworks aimed at achieving regional sustainability targets.

Speakers shared the importance of workplace engagement and how it drives adoption – providing sustainable travel options works best when businesses actively consult staff to build long-term habits. We learnt that decarbonisation requires close alignment between developers, local authorities, research institutions, and site occupiers.

Harworth Group plc is the master developer transforming the former Orgreave Colliery in Waverley, South Yorkshire, into the region’s largest mixed-use sustainable regeneration project.
