From their base at AMP Technology Centre, Motive Fuels operate four hydrogen refuelling stations across the UK. The business produces green hydrogen by separating water into hydrogen and oxygen and supplying this through purpose built refuelling stations. This forward thinking firm has ambitious growth plans and following a successful funding round, they’re forecast to open four to five new re-fueling stations every year, bringing green fuel to customers across the UK and expanding out to Europe.
Motive Fuels are on a mission to decarbonise heavy transport and believe that hydrogen is the solution. A spin out from Sheffield based ITM Power, Motive Fuels use electrolysers manufactured in South Yorkshire and cylinders manufactured in Chesterfield; the team build and maintain pumps used by heavy goods vehicle operators and hydrogen car owners up and down the country.
Since forming in April 2022, Motive Fuels, which has two parent companies (ITM Power and Vitol Power), has grown from a team of 22 to 34 people, and they continue to drive recruitment. The AMP Technology Centre work space is home to a mix of engineers, product designers, health and safety specialists, sales and finance staff. The location boasts one of the refuelling stations currently operated by Motive Fuels, which uses power generated from the Park’s wind turbines to charge the electrolyser which separates the hydrogen and oxygen. As well as Motive Fuels own fleet, the station is regularly used by the three hydrogen taxis operating in Sheffield.
We recently spoke to Motive Fuels Commercial Director James Cross about his experience at AMP Technology Centre. “Having a wind turbine and space to showcase the power generation and hydrogen conversion process right here on site is a major draw for us. Plus, we are fully connected into the local supply chain and have great relationships with the other businesses, research and Catapult Centres on site. The workspace is flexible and easy to get to by car – which for us is a green ride! The space has what we need and the community and their values speak to what we are trying to achieve.”
By being based at AMP Technology Centre, Motive Fuels benefit from close proximity to a much wider community specialising in advanced manufacturing, green energy and translational research. The Advanced Manufacturing Park is one of four innovation campuses in South Yorkshire, placing AMP Technology Centre at the nucleus of the region’s Innovation District.
